Web site hosting - what is it?
Basically it is no more than the simple act of storing your web site on a
computer that is permanently connected to the Internet. This computer (known as a web
server) will then transmit your web site's pages to any other computer that visits your
site at any time of the day or night. This web server does not have to belong to your
Internet Service Provider (ISP) i.e. the company that provides you with dial-up access to
the Internet. You can have your web site hosted on a server in Sydney, Chicago or downtown
Tokyo! However these high speed web servers do not provide you with dial-up access to the
Internet.When evaluating web site
hosting companies, there are several important things to consider: |

Security
The lobby is staffed 24x7 with building security personnel, a building-wide closed-circuit
TV system and video tape recording.
Access to the data centre area is individually authenticated, so those entering the
building must pass through turnstiles.
To get to a server with customer data on it, an intruder would have to pass through
numerous points of authentication or identification via key, card, camera, or human. Return

Power Supply
The Computer Data centre power is run through an APC
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) to eliminate brown outs and, in the event of a power
outage,to provide a bridging supply until the generators come online (which takes less
than 5 seconds).
Backup Power
The diesel generator can provide backup power for up to seven
days. One Caterpillar generator (Model 3512, 1040 KW) provides emergency power to the data
centre and cooling systems, allowing the building to operate at full capacity in the case
that external power feeds are disrupted.
Each month, a load test is performed during which the entire building's power is supplied
by the generators for at least 30 minutes.
SCSI Backups
We offer high speed data backup should customers require this
facility. This service can be negotioated via an extension of the SnowySeek Hosting
Agreement. SCSI hard drives are used for fast backup and recovery. They are kept within
their own secure room inside the data centre and access is limited to the data centre
administrators.

Monitoring/Service
The server data centre is monitored 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Network
Operations Center (NOC) centrally manages all systems, resulting in consistent monitoring,
operations and support. It is the NOC's mission to provide proactive management and issue
email and faxes before customers are even aware that a problem has occurred. |

Data Transfer:
This is the amount of network traffic transfered from your account. Most sites use
less than 1000 MB of traffic per month, but popular sites may use three or four times
that. To give you an example, 1000 MB is roughly equal to about 45,000 page views per
month.

Disk Space (MB):
One Mbyte of disk space can hold several hundred text pages or images. Most sites
use less than one Mbyte of disk space.
Unlimited FTP Updates:
You may upload files to your account 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is no
limit to the number of times you may update you web pages. In addition, almost all site
design programs like Adobe Pagemill, Macromedia Dreamweaver, GoLive HotDog, Allaire
HomeSite, CyberStudio, HotMetal Pro, Netscape Communicator and NetObjects Fusion use FTP
to maintain your site.
Anonymous FTP:
Anonymous FTP allows visitors to your site to download files via ftp without a
password. It is disabled by default.
Autoresponders:
Each of email account on our system allows you to set up an autoresponder which
is an automatic reply that is sent to anyone who sends an email to a given address.
Email Aliasing:
We give you the ability to set up email aliases. This allows to accept email anything@yourdomain.com.
